Courtney Cooke is a dancer, choreographer, and educator who has been teaching at the Lower School since 2014. Courtney began teaching in 2007 as a teaching artist in dozens of private, public, and charter schools. She stopped counting at some point but knows she has taught over 2,000 children in New York City. Courtney was mentored by dance educators Roslyn Biskin (Together in Dance) and Shannon Hummel (Cora Dance) early in her teaching career. Courtney is an active performance artist and dancer, most recently dancing with choreographers Kim Brandt, Emily Wexler, Jennifer Monson, and Niall Jones. She has most recently performed at MoMA PS1, The Shed, Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), LMCC River to River Festival, Sculpture Center, The Kitchen, The Guggenheim Museum, Center for Performance Research, Judson Church, and Danspace Project. Courtney has a B.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University and a master’s from Teachers College, Columbia University. Courtney dedicates her teaching practice to her high school dance teacher, Shirlene Blake.
