“I believe that teachers, like poets, are lifelong students of human nature. One of the joys of teaching literature and writing is finding new ways to explore the lived experience. Drawing from a range of texts and perspectives, my aim is to inspire students to both reflect and take risks; making connections on the page and discovering the value of one’s voice.”
Julia Edwards started at Poly Prep as a permanent substitute teacher in 2020, shortly after earning her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She was thrilled to join the English Department as an interim Upper School teacher in 2022. In addition to her MFA, she holds a BA with a focus in literature and writing from Sarah Lawrence College. Before coming to Poly, Julia worked as a writer and editor for K-12 educational materials. A published poet, she served as a Visiting Poet at The Dalton School in 2021, has taught poetry to college undergraduates, and has held independent writing workshops for students of all ages. Reading and writing have always been central to Julia’s life, and she is excited to share the power of words with the students in her World Literature and Creative Writing classes.
